It was kind of explained that he changed because he wants to show that he can be a good husband. (In the synopsis) But it's clear that in the past he was scared of the married life and wanted to escape it due to the implications of being the cousins of the crown prince. The crown prince hates him for "taking away" Inès from him so, that was probably the reason why he started indulging into "debauchery" too, with other women. Inès herself told him that she knew that the reason why he enlisted into the military is because (what she assumes) he didn't wanted to get married and get shackled. But... He has a pride and fell for her with the proof that he got very "horny" for her after he saw her once and kept having dreams with her where there was no consequences of his actions.
